Disadvantages
1) With the need of certain genes to help prevent donar rejection of the pg organs, these maylead to infectious viruses from the pigs to cause inffection in the other organs of the humans leading to diseases (Beschroner,2012).
2) Research shows that certain pig organs are not completely the same as the human ones. For example, the pig liver unlike the human one is not able to support the patient for long periods of time. This means that patient as to coming in for regular checkups, and perhaps have to wait again once the pig liver is no longer working (Beschroner,2012).
3) The body temperature of a pig is about 39 degreees, where as a human is 37. Therefore, by putting a pig organ in the human, certain enzymes in the organs may not function properly as its not the optimum temperature or they may not get used to the change (Dooldeniya,2003)
4) Xenotransplantation can cause several ethical issues for humans. Pigs for example are considered holy and sacred in certain traditions and cultures. This could cause an issue with these people as they are against the use of the pigs. Other people think that its not right to harm the pigs this way and its mean to do that. These are all ethical issues faced by these people. Looking at figure 2, it shows the responses people give towards the different type of organ donation. FOr xenotransplantation, most of them gave negative reponses against the use of xenotransplantation in all three surveys. This shows how big an ethical issue it is. This could be a huge problem as people would reject the use of this treatment (Bio Technology Learning Hub,2008).
